This is painting of My son, Jason, currently serving in the United States Air Force and his two sons.  Jayden is the older brother and Riley the younger.  It was such a precious moment captured in a split second on film.  I have painted these three numerous times and I am sure they will be the subject of many paintings to come.  

What I really loved about this composition is the differences in the body types and gestures.  The adult in the background is leaning forward and holding up the youngest child while the older brother leans forward to give a quick kiss on the forehead.

It all started with a visit to see my cousin Mary Ellen in Maryland.  We get together every so often to have an art day.  It always involves lots of art, laughter and good food!  On this visit I had the presence of mind to load my car with some of my hats from my prop closet and a couple of my kimonos just in case anyone was up for a photo shoot.  My good fortune continued when I realized that Virginia, Alice and Alvah we also going to join us.  After a respectable amount of time at the work table I approached everyone with the option to add a photo shoot to the fun.  They were all game and tried on hats and kimonos and posed for me.  What fun! Alice pulled out her violin and posed and even got some great shots of her Dad playing his guitar!  When I am not fortunate enough to have a live model in the studio...I opt for my fabulous collection of inspirational photos.  

Here we have Virginia and Alice...grandmother and granddaughter.  They were both so much fun trying on hats and kimonos.  I love the relationship between these two.  The love and respect is obvious.  I worked on this off and on for the last couple of months and may work on it some more...but for now I am going to call it done. 

In other news, we are getting ready for our move to North Carolina.  I have been cleaning things out.  I don't believe my studio has EVER been so clean!  I purged the space of my rejected paintings and put things away.  Of course now I can't find anything!

There is nothing more comforting than being in safe in the arms of someone you know will protect you at all cost and who loves you unconditionally.  This is a portrait of unconditional love.  

One of my artistic goals is to paint with more spontaneity.  I love the loose look of paint that appears to be randomly splashed on the canvas.  What I have learned through the years is that the look of spontaneity comes with practice.  It sounds like an oxymoron...controlled spontaneity...but it is what strive to achieve.

I paint portraits of my family frequently.  They are available and will let me take source photos of them and some of them will even sit for me.  I also paint family because it makes me smile.  As I paint I remember our times together and it just makes me happy.  

This portrait is my younger brother, Richard, with a dear friend of his.  I was in Chicago visiting Richard and doing some portrait sketches of him when Mamta stopped by to visit.  I was fortunate to have my camera in my hand when they hugged...what a great moment to capture.  I knew immediately I wanted to try to capture the love on canvas.

I painted this a year or so ago.  I wanted to do a portrait of my mom...but she hates having her picture taken and I knew she wouldn't sit for me.  I spent a week with my parents and took lots of pictures of the family and finally pointed my camera at her...she didn't protest she just gave me the slightest "Mona Lisa" smile and I snapped while I had the chance.  There is so much about this portrait that I love.  I love the cuff bracelet she always wears.  I love it when she wears red.  I love that she smiled for me even though I knew she didn't want to.   I love that she is in her 80's and I still get to talk to her every day.  When I showed her the portrait she said "Thank you for painting me pretty."  I love my mom.  Happy Mother's day...

Of course this one is not for sale...but I could do one of YOUR mom...just a thought...;)
